Nurturing Natives- Eastern Meadowlark

Hear a cheery song emanating from a nearby field? It could be an eastern meadowlark that has just arrived in southeast Michigan for breeding season! These birds have a beautiful bright yellow belly and nest on the ground in grasslands. Be sure not to disturb their nesting sites, as parents will abandon their eggs if disturbed by humans. Interestingly enough, these birds aren’t larks at all, rather belonging to the blackbird family.
