Nurturing Natives- Bloodroot

White bloodroot flower with red stem sits atop a large green leaf on brown backround

Bloodroot is a fascinating springtime ephemeral with blooms lasting only a couple weeks. The plant gets its off-putting name from it’s blood-red, latex-like secretion that’s expelled once cut. Interestingly, this fluid is incredibly toxic and can cause skin tissue necrosis. It’s best not to pick this plant and enjoy this spring wonder from a distance!
