Nurturing natives- Big brown bat
This big bat is an extremely abundant bat across the Americas, and is also found in Michigan! Its range begins in northern Canada and stretches all the way down to the southern tip of Mexico! Their name derives from their impressive wingspan, ranging fro 13-16 inches. According to Bat Conservation International, “big brown bats are one of America’s most beneficial animals”! They aren’t peculiar about which bugs they eat, so they help keep pests off of crops. Keep an eye out for bat boxes in areas near you, as you may just spot one of these flying mammals taking off at night!
