DRAGON COVE OF MYTHS, LEGENDS, AND STORIES: Chinese Dragons, Bringers of Luck and FortunešŸ‰

Chinese dragon

Whereas one culture attributes dragons to a personification of evil and destruction, another sees it as a symbol of fortune and prosperity. How did this come about? Perhaps it’s the faultiness of translation, Chinese long are not equivalent to western dragons, but both being giant scaly creatures, they ended up under the same label.

When you think of dragons, do you think of a giant scaly firebreathing lizard? Or maybe a god-like entity bringing wealth and good luck? Chinese dragons, or 龙(long), are serpent-like deities with the horns of a deer, bird-like claws, scales of a fish, a mane, and no wings (other cultures such as Japan and Korea have similar mythological creatures). In contrast to the fire-spitting image of western dragons, ancient Chinese people believed that dragons brought rain, ensuring a bountiful harvest. The dragon is also the fifth animal in the Chinese Zodiac which cycles through 12 zodiac animals annually!
