Nurturing Natives- Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

A yellow-bellied sapsucker sits on a lone branch on a snowy background

The yellow-bellied sapsucker is a welcome and curious sight in Ann Arbor! Typically, these woodpeckers reside and breed in northern Michigan, the norther east coast, Canada, and even Alaska, and will travel south for the winter into the lower US and Central America. However, they migrate through southeast Michigan on their travels! Yellow-bellied sapsuckers- unique to their species- feed mostly on sap from drilled-into trees, and also use them as makeshift bug traps! Keep an ear out for their distinct “mew”, as they have been spotted recently in Nichols Arboretum and in Gallup Park!
