Nurturing Natives- Ermine

A white stoat sits inside a tiny ice cave in a snowy hill with snow around it

These small fluffy mammals, known as ermine, stoats, and short-tailed-weasles, change their brown coats to an icy white when winter comes to blend in with the snow around them! Inhabiting bogs and woodland areas, these carnivores are more often found in the UP and Northern lower Michigan, but will sometimes be found in Ann Arbor. These amazing creatures, while often weighing less a pound, will hunt prey much larger than themselves, like rabbits! If you want to spot one, make sure you keep a keen eye out, as they’re quite elusive and enjoy being solitary, rather than in packs.
