Nurturing Natives- Eastern Cottontail

A brown eastern cottontail bunny sits on a blanket of snow as snowflakes come down.

The eastern cottontail is the most abundant rabbit in all of the US, and can be found almost everywhere in Michigan! While they tend to avoid populated areas, they can still be found foraging suburban yards for grass, bark, and flowers, sometimes even setting up their nests nearby! To stay warm in the winter, these fluffy friends grow a thick insulating undercoat and utilize fat reserves. They also reduce blood flow to their extremities like ears and paws. They will also bundle up together in their burrows to stay cozy!
