Why would they say that?

The other day I was thinking about movie piracy. Not because I would ever do that, of course not. That’d be illegal. Highly unethical. Absolutely not something I would ever participate in. I was just wondering about it from a completely outsider standpoint ! :)

First of all, why is it call it piracy? Real pirates had ships. And swords. And parrots. They sailed across oceans stealing treasure chests and yelling “Arrr” and “Yo-ho-ho.” Meanwhile, modern “pirates” are just… sitting in their bedrooms clicking a suspiciously large green download button.

There’s no ship or sea, or eyepatches or peglegs. Just a VPN and mild virus anxiety.

The whole concept feels like its intentionally dramaticized... like big pirate really sat down and thought, How can we make downloading a movie sound bad? And someone said, “I know! pirates!”

Of course, again, I wouldn’t know anything about that. I would neverrrr pirate a movie, that’d be illegal! But, hypothetically speaking, someone might argue that downloading something from a massive billion-dollar corporation isn’t exactly shaking the moral foundations of society…

Still… if pirates did exist today, I imagine their ships would look less like wooden galleons and more like laptops overheating at 2 a.m.

But again. Not that I would know. Obviously.
