How can our University’s archives and libraries inspire artmaking?

That is the question at the heart of Artists in the Archive, a collaboration among the U-M Arts Initiative, the Office of the Vice President of Research, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, the Bentley Historical Library, William L. Clements Library, and the University of Michigan Library.

overview

Artists in the Archives identifies 6-8 U-M faculty looking to explore a U-M, Bentley, or Clements Library collection in order to catalyze their creative practice. The program is open to projects where there is a direct connection between the archival material and the artwork the applicant will make, e.g. an artwork about Filipino history for which an artist seeks to engage archives related to Filipino history; as well as projects where there is a more indirect relationship between the proposed project and the collections named by the applicant. Overall, the program is most interested in projects that does what the arts do so well: invite transformation–of ideas, of content, of material.
