Nurturing Natives- Michigan Monkeyflower

The Michigan monkeyflower is a small flowering plant endemic to Michigan, meaning it exists no place else in the wild. Found only in the Grand Traverse and Mackinac Straits area, the flower is listed as endangered and relies on clean running water to productively reproduce and thrive. Due to recreational development in its native habitat and destruction of the water table, it’s had an incredibly hard time surviving. The flower, if stumbled upon, is hard to miss! It sports bright yellow tubular flowers with a possible bright magenta dotting on its throat. They usually bloom through mid-June and into July, but has even occasionally bloomed through October!
