Mark Clague

Executive Director, U-M Arts Initiative

Mark Clague is a musicologist whose research explores how music shapes community, identity, and civic life in the United States. A professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance and Executive Director of the Arts Initiative, he is best known for his scholarship on “The Star-Spangled Banner” and as editor-in-chief of The George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition. His book O Say Can You Hear?: A Cultural Biography of “The Star-Spangled Banner” (W.W. Norton, 2022) earned acclaim from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Economist. Through his teaching, writing, and public engagement, Clague illuminates music’s power to connect people and inspire social understanding.
