Science Benches

Michele Oka Doner (’66 & ’68 MFA)
Two in 1990 and a third in 1995; Bronze; Artifact
Central Campus; Ingalls Mall between Kraus and Chemistry Buildings

Made possible by a grant from the Michigan Commission on Public Art, gifts to the university, and the generosity of the artist. Of the two benches acquired in 1990, the 7’ one is called the “Physics Bench” and depicts tracings of atomic activity. The 10’ “Ice Rings” bench was based on the ice rings of Saturn. Another 7’ bench was added in 1995. Doner is also the sculptor of the Positron near Randall Lab, and the three-piece group Angry Nepture, Salacia and Strider, located at the Museum of Art.
