Rackham Building Facade Bas Reliefs

Corrado Parducci
1938; Limestone; Architectural Feature
Central Campus; Front (south) facade of Rackham

The five panels contain figures depicting various areas of study: Social Sciences; Physical Sciences; Languages and Literature; Biological Sciences; and Health Science. There are also two bas reliefs on the balconies on either side of the main entrance, representing Fine Arts and Museums. Parducci was also the sculptor of the numerous bas reliefs on the former Ann Arbor News Building at 340 East Huron (executed 1936). During a major renovation of Rackham in 2002, a full-size plaster model of the Fine Arts panel was discovered in a storage area. It was placed in the lobby of Tappan Hall, home of the History of Art department, where it can be viewed up close.
