Two University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) faculty members have been nominated for multiple GRAMMY® Awards.

A new album of music by Michael Daugherty (composition), Tales of Hemingway on the Naxos label, has been nominated for three awards. Recorded with the Nashville Symphony conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero, the album’s title work, Tales of Hemingway for cello and orchestra, features cellist Zuill Bailey and is nominated in the categories of Best Contemporary Classical Composition and Best Classical Instrumental Solo. The album also received a nomination for Best Classical Compendium. It recently received 10 out of 10 stars in a Classics Today review. Daugherty previously won a GRAMMY Award in the category of Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2010 for Deus Ex Machina.

The title track, Tales of Hemingway, evokes the turbulent life, adventures, and literature of author Ernest Hemingway. The other works on the album are also musical portraits based on larger-than-life personalities: American Gothic is a concerto for orchestra, reflecting on the creative world of Iowa artist Grant Wood; and Once Upon a Castleis a sinfonia concertante for organ and orchestra, inspired by the rich history of the Hearst Castle, built by billionaire newspaper publisher Randolph Hearst, the inspiration for Orson Welles’s film Citizen Kane.The work features GRAMMY Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs.

Joseph Gramley, associate professor of music and director of percussion studies, has received two nominations in his role as percussionist and associate artistic director of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. The group is nominated in the category of Best World Music Album, for Sing Me Home, on the Masterworks label, featuring original and traditional folk tunes interpreted by the Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, and a range of guest artists. The ensemble also received a nomination for Best Music Film for the documentary The Music of Strangers (Tremelo Productions), which follows the Silk Road Ensemble as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution.

In addition, several musical theatre alumni are represented on albums that were nominated for Best Musical Theatre Album including Bright Star (A.J. Shively, BFA ’08, and Lizzie Klemperer, BFA ’10); Fiddler on the Roof (Samantha Massell, BFA ’12); and Waitress (Max Kumangai, BFA ’08 and Ryan Vasquez, BFA ’14)

The 2017 GRAMMY Award winners will be announced on Feb. 12, 2017.
