ICYMI, Part 3: Fall 2020 Events and Exhibitions

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design has created a new $25,000 prize to advance the project of one graduating senior.

Many events and exhibitions had to shift to a virtual format this semester, but luckily, that means many of them are still available to enjoy online. In the coming weeks, we are highlighting some of the top events and exhibitions from this semester that you can revisit, in case you missed it.

U-M MUSEUM OF ART ON NGOROMERA AND SCULPTURE AS SOUND – IN CONVERSATION WITH MASIMBA HWATI

In this conversation, artists Masimba Hwati and Mayela Rodriguez discussed Hwati’s work “Ngoromera,” which will be installed at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in 2021 as part of “I Write to You About Africa,” a complete reinstallation of the Museum’s African art gallery.

STAMPS GALLERY THE PANDEMIC CIRCLE BY RAQS MEDIA COLLECTIVE

The Pandemic Circle is an online exhibition and screening of new videos commissioned by Stamps Gallery, Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, and presented in partnership with EXPO CHICAGO. It features the premiere of two new video works by Raqs Media Collective: “twentyfourbyseven,” and “Why do they call the answer to a question, a solution?,” which complete the Pandemic Circle along with their recent video 31 Days. The Raqs Media Collective also gave a Penny Stamps Speaker Series talk during this semester.

One of two films commissioned by the Stamps Gallery, twentyfourbyseven, 2020, by Raqs Media Collective portrays the out-of-body sensation of looking back on each moment as it passes.

UMS LISA BIELAWA’S VOTERS’ BROADCAST

Commissioned as part of the Democracy and Debate Theme Semester, Lisa Bielawa’s Voters’ Broadcast aimed to stimulate voter engagement, political awareness, and community participation, through the act of giving voice to the concerns of fellow citizens during the lead-up to the 2020 Presidential election. The text for Voters’ Broadcast was excerpted from artist Sheryl Oring’s project “I Wish to Say,” in collaboration with U-M Stamps Gallery.

MICHIGAN MARCHING BAND NO PLACE LIKE HOME

In the final virtual halftime show of the semester, the Michigan Marching Band presented “No Place Like HoMe” in mid-December. Arranged, choreographed and performed by MMB students in their virtual band modules, this special halftime performance looks forward to when our Michigan family can once again safely return hoMe. 

U-M MODERN GREEK GENERATION G INTERVIEW WITH FASHION DESIGNER MARY KATRANTZOU

Generation G is an initiative of the C.P. Cavafy Professorship to create a video series of interviews with creative people who self identify as Greek, and who are working to make a difference in the world. In this interview, Mary Katrantzou discussed her work in the fashion industry during the most challenging year of 2020 in an interview by VOGUE Greece editor Giota Tachtara on the basis of questions from students and the broader community.

ARTS ENGINES WITH AARON DWORKIN KEN FISCHER

Ken Fischer, President Emeritus of the University Musical Society, spoke to the importance of community engagement in arts organizations on the DPTV-produced “Arts Engines With Aaron Dworkin,” featuring SMTD professor Aaron Dworkin.
