Gleefully eastward

Ten alumni are touring China with the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club through May 16. The choir group is embarking on a 15-day, five-concert tour, performing in Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Shanghai.

The alumni, who are former Glee Club members and live in seven different states and England, graduated from the University of Michigan during the late 1950s through the 1970s. They will perform with the Glee Club in Wuhan and Shanghai.

FOLLOW ALONG WITH THE GLEE CLUB’S EASTWARD EXCURSION

The Glee Club — second oldest collegiate chorus in the U.S. — is renowned for its wide repertoire of Renaissance motets, Romantic anthems, opera choruses, contemporary works, and Michigan songs. Graduate and undergraduate members are chosen by audition and represent nearly all of the 17 schools and colleges at U-M.

The Glee Club was honored in 1959 to be the first American male choir to win first place at the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, and has since won three more first-place prizes.

The Glee Club performs regularly within the Michigan, and embarks on annual tours in the U.S. and abroad.  In 1967, the Glee Club went on a world tour globe in celebration of the University’s sesquicentennial year, and toured the Far East in 1989, Russia and Eastern Europe in 1992, South America in 1996, Australia in 2000, and Great Britain and Ireland in 2004.
