Attend at Home: Events + Exhibitions for the Week of July 19th

Many of the museums, galleries and performance venues at the University of Michigan are reopening while others remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. This week, enjoy the following selection of events, exhibitions, performances, and films—most remain virtual, while some can now be enjoyed safely in-person:

In-Person Events:

U-M SMTD: SUMMER “7 AT 7” CARILLON CONCERT SERIES, JOHN WIDMANN

The Summer Carillon Series offers audiences a socially distant activity each Monday through August 9 and features performers from Michigan and around the U.S. playing at either Burton or Lurie Tower. John Widmann, City Carillonneur of the City of Frederick, MD, performs the fourth concert of the series at Burton Memorial Tower. His program ranges from original compositions for carillon to classical transcriptions to movie themes.

U-M STAMPS: HALAL METROPOLIS

This Tuesday is the last day to view the Stamps Gallery exhibition, Halal Metropolis, by artist Osman Khan, photographer Razi Jafri, and historian Sally Howell. It explores the facts, fictions, and imaginaries of the Muslim population(s) in Detroit and Southeast Michigan as viewed through historical research, documentation of current conditions, and explorations of future desires. U-M’S SCOTT ELLSWORTH ON THE 1921 TULSA RACE MASSACRE

The U-M Club of Washington, D.C., invites you to a conversation with U-M scholar Scott Ellsworth on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, on July 22 at 7 p.m. ET. Attendance is free, with the opportunity to donate to the club’s undergraduate scholarships.

UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: A NEW MUSIC CONCERT

The University Symphony Orchestra presents New Music concert 2021. This virtual premiere will feature pieces written, performed and conducted by students.

UMMA: VIRTUAL FAMILY ART STUDIO, BLIND CONTOUR FROM THE STUDIO TO CAFE SKETCHES

At its core, drawing is hand-eye coordination. From Pablo Picasso to Georgia O’Keeffe, artists of all stripes practice quick figure drawings to warm up and keep their eyes sharp. Get a beginner’s introduction to figure drawing with Literature, Science, and the Arts junior Elizabeth Yoon.

KELSEY MUSEUM SATURDAY SAMPLER: EXCAVATING KARANIS, PART 1

Join the Kelsey Museum’s virtual Saturday Samplers to enjoy the museum from home. The theme of this week’s tour is the Kelsey Museum’s excavations at Karanis, Egypt, in the 1920s and ’30s. Part one of this Zoom tour will use photos from the excavations and items in the Kelsey’s collection to focus on the houses uncovered in the excavations as well as their contents.
