Many of the museums, galleries and performance venues at the University of Michigan are reopening while others remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. This week, enjoy the following selection of events, exhibitions, performances, and films—most remain virtual, while some can now be enjoyed safely in-person:
For this series of three live stream concerts from Brooklyn, New York, vibraphonist Cecilia Smith and pianist Lafayette Harris, Jr. will play arrangements for vibes and piano based on three themes: Jazz & History, Jazz & Emotion, and Jazz & Culture once a month through October.
When:
A new online exhibit created by two undergraduate students at the University of Michigan, Quinn Byington and William McClelland, under the mentorship of Zachary Quint, the Librarian for Classical Studies and Modern Greek. “Commemorating the Greek War of Independence,” commemorates the 200th anniversary of the revolution that began in 1821.
When: The exhibit is available online for free here.
This weekly series takes place at 7 PM on Mondays from June 21 to August 9, featuring performers from Michigan and around the U.S. playing at either Burton or Lurie Tower. At Lurie Tower, Annette Wright (St. Mary of Redford Catholic Church, Detroit) performs the seventh and last of our “7 at 7” Monday night carillon concerts. Bring your picnic blanket to Eda U. Gerstacker Grove on North Campus!

Bank of Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch Summer Concert Series will return to Liberty Plaza after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The open air concerts at the corner of Liberty and Division are free to the public.

The Gutman Gallery is reopening on August 13 for the opening reception of HOME, an all media art exhibition exploring the different meanings of “home”. Juried by Sue Ann Round, the exhibition features 31 works from 22 talented artists. The jury-selected works represent a variety of styles, techniques, and media, including mixed media paintings by Armando Pedroso, sculptures by Leanne Schnepp, and a linoprint by returning artist, Betsy Stecker.
When: Open house style reception on Friday, August 13 from 4-6 p.m. EDT and runs through September 25
