Many of the museums, galleries, and performance venues at the University of Michigan remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, there are still plenty of online events, exhibitions, performances, and films that you can experience from home. This week, we are celebrating the Class of 2021 through several virtual events, as well as a variety of other listings for you to enjoy:
April is National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year the U-M Humanities Institute will be joining the tens of millions of readers, students, teachers, librarians, booksellers, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, in marking poetry’s important place in our lives. Every weekday at noon in April, their YouTube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. There will also be a daily April poetry challenge and “pop-up poems” across campus.
Join in celebrating the class of 2021 with Christine El-Hage, Zoe Lei, and HyoJin Jenna Moon on Tuesday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. as they perform “The Victors” and “The Yellow and the Blue” at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon, the Burton Memorial Tower, and the Kerrytown Chimes.
When: Tuesday, Apr. 27, 7 p.m. EDT
Learn about one of the most destructive invasive species to ever enter the Great Lakes, the sea lamprey, and the history of the invasion, and monumental efforts to control them. Cory Brant will talk about his award-winning book, “Great Lakes Sea Lamprey: The 70 Year War on a Biological Invader,” followed by a Q&A. Attend this University of Michigan Press Great Lakes author event in honor of spring and Earth Day!
When: Tuesday, Apr. 27, 7–8 p.m. EDT
This virtual lecture presented by Art House features Dr. Swapnil Rai, assistant professor in the Department of Film, Television and Media. Her research focuses on global film and television, media industries, women and gender studies, race and ethnicity, transnational stardom, and celebrity culture.
When: Thursday, Apr. 29, 7 p.m. EDT
Tunde Olaniran performs an exclusive set featuring WDWHI (“WE DON’T WANNA HEAR IT”) — the first of four singles from Tunde’s forthcoming full-length album to be released during their Digital Artist Residency with UMS. Directed by Oren Goldenberg.
When: Friday, Apr. 30–Monday, May 10
Join Stamps Gallery in celebration of the Stamps School of Art and Design Class of 2021. The event will kick off with welcome remarks by Dean Gunalan Nadarajan and faculty. This will be followed by a series of Zoom meeting conversations, each hosted by a faculty member and led by a student facilitator. Each meeting will focus on a different medium that Stamps Senior students are working in.
When: Friday, Apr. 30, 4–6:30 p.m. EDT
Saturday Sampler tours are back! Join the Kelsey Museum over Zoom to explore the collection from the comfort of your home. This Zoom tour will examine some aspects of ancient Egyptian burial practices using artifacts from the Kelsey’s collection as well as images of artifacts in several other museums.
When: Saturday, May 1, 2–3 p.m. EDT
If you would like your event to be included in next week’s “Attend at Home” series, email arts-culture@umich.edu.
