For new Winter 2025 and Fall 2025 U-M artist residency programs
A component of the U-M Arts Initiative’s Creators on Campus program, the Visiting Artist Integration Project (VAIP) integrates the creative vision and dynamic thinking of artists into the process of engagement and learning. Any unit can apply to launch a new VAIP residency. VAIP residencies must be new programs with an emphasis on artists working with a U-M school, college, or unit. Proposed artist residencies should be one semester to one academic year in length.
VAIPs include Arts Initiative staff support, which may include (but is not limited to): Assistance with calls-for-artists, co-developing the integration of an artist’s practice within the applying unit, co-development of visiting artist itineraries (including handling artist travel/lodging arrangements), processing some or all of the program’s financial transactions, sharing best practices for working with artists, and more.
Award Amount: The Arts Initiative’s contributions toward selected projects will be based on need. This is not a traditional award.* Because VAIP is a partnership with the Arts Initiative, program expenses will be paid out directly by the Arts Initiative.
*Note: This program is a programmatic partnership with the Arts Initiative that comes with financial support, and is intended for NEW visiting artist programs only. To apply for financial support for existing visiting artist programs, see Visiting Artist Support Grants (VASG).
For questions or to submit an idea for a new VAIP, contact Arts Initiative Program Curator, Kathryn Grabowski-Khairullah, at kgkhair@umich.edu.
