When and where did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was 3 years old at a dance studio in Davenport called "Dance Unlimited."
What is your favorite style dance?
I would have to say Jazz and Jazz-funk, which I would characterize as a sassy type of jazz. I like being able to give attitude and show my personality when I dance and I prefer strong but graceful movement—sharp movements that are also aesthetically pleasing.
You were also a cheerleader in high school. What differences and similarities do you see between the two sports?
Well, a similarity would be that both operate as a team activity. I competed as a member of a team for both dance and cheer. Also, both involve a lot of practice rehearsing a routine and complete cooperation from team members. I feel a difference would be that cheerleading involves more responsibility and trust amongst team members since it is a more dangerous sport—you are throwing girls in the air. On the other hand, there is less personal expression in cheerleading. You can't really put your emotion into cheerleading because everyone has to have a uniform style and not stand out as an individual.
What would you say dancing has taught you as a person?
It has definitely taught me dedication, determination, and hard work. You can't improve as a dancer unless you put a lot of time and effort into it. Dance team especially has helped me be a better leader. During my junior and senior years in high school I had the privilege of being a captain of my team, and I definitely think my leadership skills improved from having that role. I also think there is a social aspect that one gains from building strong, lasting friendships.
How are you keeping dance a part of your life in college?
I am on the Michigan Dance Team. We perform at football and basketball games and also compete in the Universal Dance Association National Dance competition. Being a part of the team forces me to make dance a priority; otherwise, I think dance might be overshadowed by academics. Being on the team also helps me balance and manage my time and it is a stress-reliever from classes and exams.
Do you find it difficult to balance dance and academics in college?
Not at all, I actually think it is a benefit to be involved in dance in college. Since I know I only have so much time for academics, I procrastinate less. I know I have weekly practices and games that I must manage my time around.
Do you plan to remain active in dance in your new chosen career path of business and if so, how?
I really don't plan to dance after college; however, I want to stay involved in dance by supporting my younger sister, Molly, who also dances. I will continue to attending Broadway shows and ballets and keep dance a part of my life even if I am not dancing.
If you could change one thing about the Michigan Dance Team, what would it be?
I would change the Michigan Dance Team from a club sport to be a sport funded by the Athletic department. I think our team is an asset to the school and that we deserve to be a part of athletics.
Which dancer or dance company do you admire the most and why?
I admire Leslie Murchie, a graduating senior member of the Michigan Dance Team not only for her strong jazz dancing technique but for her leadership and commitment to the team.
What has been your most memorable performance and why?
My performance in the finals at the Universal Dance Association National High School Competition is my most memorable experience. It last time competing with a group of girls that I have been dancing with my entire life. It was a great jazz routine to Billy Joel music that placed 13th at Nationals, a great achievement. We competed amongst such amazing teams, such incredible dancers. The feeling was indescribable.
Are there any misconceptions about dancers that you disagree with?
I disagree with the notion that dancing is not athletic. I don't argue that it is a sport, but it definitely takes extreme athleticism and strength.
What three words do you feel describe your medium the best?
Strength, grace, and personality
What are some your priorities other than dance?
The most important things in my life are my faith, my family, my friends, and my schoolwork.
