When and why did you begin dancing?
When I was five years old my mother put my sisters and I in dance. I was the only one that enjoyed it so I continued to do it.
What form of dance to you perform?
I am trained in cecchetti, a form of ballet in which you take exams and perform dance recitals and shows. It also helps dancers develop their technical development more from the exercises they perform. It's a wonderful form of dance that builds strength, discipline, and coordination as a dancer trains.
How were you involved in MUSKET's production of "Signing in the Rain?"
I had a dancer's role within the musical. That was perfect because I was able to use my dance training. Also, I was able to perform one of my favorite forms of dance, tap. I enjoyed myself tremendously.
How did you find out about the musical "Singing in the Rain?"
I found out about the production of "Singing in the Rain" from a friend I met in Spanish class. She was another artistic person and she thought that I may like being a part of the musical. At my audition I had to give a vocal and dance performance. Then I was chosen to play a dancer.
Do you plan to perform in another musical with the same company? Why?
I would love to be involved with MUSKET in the future if possible. "Singing in the Rain" was a perfect show for me because of the dancing and people involved. If they ever have another big dancing show, I'll audition.
Are you currently involved in any other dance group on campus?
Not at this point in time. When I got involved with the musical it took up most of my time. However, I am looking at some of the other dance groups, but I'm taking my time. I don't want to overwhelm myself with too much work.
How did you keep focused during the musical?
I had to manage my time wisely. I spent any spare moments either practicing my choreography or studying. Sometimes I would practice my choreography on my way to class. It took up the majority of my time, but I found a way to balance everything out over time.
Whenever you perform do you get nervous? What do you to get over it?
I don't think I get nervous. In fact, I wouldn't call it a nervous feeling; it was more of an anxious excitement. I get a rush when I'm about to perform. That is why I enjoy dancing so much.
Do you have any advice for other dancers?
Do not just stick to one form of dance. Instead, try different forms of dance because you never know what you will like. Remember to always have fun.
