What type of dance do you do, and how long have you been dancing?
The dance I am involved with is a type of Indian dance called Bharatanatyam. I have been dancing for twelve years. It has become such a part of my life that to this day I dance for about three to eight hours a week.
What is your favorite part about dancing?
We tell stories through Bharatanatyam, so we have to use a lot of facial expressions and body language to stylistically convey the content of the message. Combining storytelling with the rhythm of the music appeals to me in a very real way, and is definitely my favorite aspect of Bharatanatyam.
To what extent do you consider yourself a visual artist (in terms of drawing)?
I definitely consider myself more of a performance artist through dance. However, I've also been drawing my whole life, for as long as I can remember. I enjoy drawing as another form of self-expression. I also find that it is a great stress reliever just to get my feelings onto the paper.
What is your favorite thing to draw, and what is your favorite drawing that you have done?
People are without a doubt my favorite thing to draw because I like to try to capture the essence of their personality through my depiction. My favorite drawing that I have ever done is probably a charcoal drawing of Bob Dylan that I drew a couple of years ago. I feel that this particular drawing (of a present-day Dylan) really shows his growth as an individual and a musician.
What kind of formal arts education do you have?
Well, in addition to dancing for twelve years, I took advanced drawing, painting, and design classes in high school. It's funny, though, because I actually plan to major in Psychology for a pre-Medical degree.
What role does art play in your life?
Art plays a huge role in my life; it's my favorite pastime. It helps me to pay attention to the world around me, and to notice the simple beauties of everyday things.
So then why do you want to pursue a career in medicine over a career in art?
I have always wanted to have a career in medicine. It has been a dream of mine since I was six years old. Personally, if I were to pursue a career in art, it would take the fun out of it for me. I look to art as a form of relaxation, and I would not want it any other way.
How have you gotten involved with the arts at Michigan?
I participated in this year's IASA Culture Show. (IASA is the Indian American Student Association). This really allowed me to portray my passion for dance within the setting of the University community. It was really a great experience.
Who inspires you? Who are your role models?
My family inspires me the most, especially my brother Shilpin (who is a junior at the University of Michigan). He has experienced a lot in his life and I admire the courage with which he has faced everything. He reminds me to channel my life experiences—good or bad—into personal strength and self-expression.
How do you think art has helped you in other areas of your life?
Art has helped me to get in touch with who I am. I would not be the person I am without the strong presence of art in my life. I think everyone should try to get involved in some kind of art form just to see the possibilities.
