Fall 2006

When and where did you start dancing?

I started dancing at the age of 5 at the Geiger Classic Ballet Academy.

How is ballet different from other forms of dance?

Ballet is the basis of dance. It is the trunk from which all other forms of dance spread and without a solid base in this classical style there is not much to work with in regards to jazz, modern etc... Also, ballet is more constrained. Artistic interpretation is expressed more through musicality and facial nuance than variety of movement.

What would you say dancing has taught you as a person?

Dancing has taught me poise, grace, discipline, dedication, fulfillment, altruism, work ethic and so much more!

How are you continuing to keep ballet a part of your life in college?

Unfortunately right now I am only taking a ballet class twice a week with the dance school at U of M. I really miss performing so next semester I'll hopefully find an outlet for my passion.

If you could change one thing about ballet, what would it be?

Well from a selfish point of view I would want to lower the standard for turn-out from 180 degrees to about 90 degrees but I know that it would just take away from the sheer beauty of a dancer's technique. I love it the way it is!

Which dancer do you admire the most and why?

I admire Gillian Murphy the most because her movement is so ethereal and light. She is able to mold into any type of character and make the audience believe that she is the person she embodies.

What has been your most memorable performance on stage and why?

My final performance with the Michigan Classic Ballet Company was most memorable. We performed Les Sylphides at a regional festival, opening for the most prestigious night of dances. I was able to do the Pas de Deux with my friend of many years, while surrounded with my favorite company members that I had become so close with through the years.

What is your dream role and ballet company and why?

Odette/Odile from Swan Lake with the American Ballet Theater because it is such a versatile role danced to my favorite classical score of all time! Also the costumes, sets, symphony, and company members are all top quality.

Do you feel dancers are portrayed honestly in the media i.e. in movies such as "Center Stage" and "Step up?"

I haven't seen "Step Up" but I do believe that "Center Stage" was a relatively accurate portrayal of ballet life in NYC. Weight IS a constant struggle among dancers, directors WILL kick you out for lacking turn-out or feet, you DO get judged on how you perform regardless of how hard you work.

What three words do you feel describe your medium the best?

Grace, nuance, and awe.
