How are you involved with the arts at the University?
I am in the Cornrows Dance Company. The style of dance is jazz and modern. I have been apart of this dance company for two years now.
How long have you danced?
I've danced for about twelve years
Why did you choose the University of Michigan instead of a dance school?
Well dance isn't anything I want to do professionally, it has always been something extra I did for recreation since I was a child.
What classes are you taking?
I'm taking CASS 410, Chemistry 230, Biology 226, Movement Science 340, and Physiology 211. In addition to this I am a member of Sister to Sister and the USNDA, a pre-dental club.
Describe the discipline and commitment it takes to do your art form.
In general it takes a lot of work to dance and learn moves. You have to be persistent and practice often, to remember steps. As a member of a team you also have to be committed to practice.
How do you balance all of your classes and still find time to dance?
I stay organized! However, I don't use a planner to list my appointments. I've grown accustom to remembering what I have to do without writing things down.
How has art added value to your University of Michigan experience?
Well, I've gained a lot from performing in front of my peers. I get to meet new people, learn more dance skills, and get exercise. Dance also allows me to express myself.
Do you see yourself doing dance after College?
Yes, I'll probably take a class or volunteer as a dance teacher in my spare time.
How can others get involved with your craft?
Well, there are dance classes offered by the University for beginner and upper level students, as well as U-Move dance classes held at the CCRB.
