Why did you choose the University of Michigan instead of a dance school?
I wanted the choice of academic excellence that the university is known for.
Since dance is an unstable profession, for health reasons, I figured I should
have a back up plan. So I decided to do a dual major in dance and political
science.
What does your schedule look like classes related to art and not related to
Art?
I am a dual degree major. So I have to get all of my academics done in the
morning. Since I don't want to pay for more credit hours, I currently am at 17
What are your favorite classes and why?
I love all of my dance classes. I am constantly inspired to improve, not only in
dance but in life as well.
Describe the discipline and commitment it takes to do your art form.
The discipline and commitment is intense. To be able to dedicate hours upon
hours, your social life, a lot of tears and sweat to perfecting your art
requires tremendous amounts of passion to be able to survive the challenges
dance creates.
How do you balance your studies and still have time for art?
Dance is built into my schedule; however for extra dance rehearsals I just use
time management. If it has to be done you'll find time to do it.
What rewards do you get out of practicing dance; a sense of accomplishment,
Escape etc?
Dance is a part of my life. I can't live without it. It gives me not only a
sense of accomplishment, but something that I continually grow and improve at
doing. Dance is also my escape, my meditation method. I will take my bipod out
to some open space, put on a song that embodies my current emotions and dance.
It's quite therapeutic.
How has art added value to your university experience?
It's given me a sense of community, with a family of dancers. Also, it has
given me opportunities that I wouldn't otherwise have. I am currently in a
contemporary dance company.
Where do you want to go with dance? Would you like to make a career out it?
I would like to become a professional dancer after college. Hopefully, I will
make it into a company and work from there! I love dance far too much to give
it up after college!
How can others get involved with your art craft? Are there any classes or
"underground" activities that you would recommend?
There are non-major dance classes available to take through the school of music.
Also the CCRB offers a variety of dance classes. There are dance groups
here on campus ranging from dance team to ballroom dance to
Hip-hop groups.
