Why did you choose the University of Michigan instead of an art school?
I wanted to have the opportunity to do liberal arts if I choose to later.
Describe the discipline and commitment it takes to do your art form.
I have to set aside a huge chunk of time to create any art project. I have to
focus and make sure there are no distractions around me. Usually, I think of
an idea and start. Then I end up redoing my project probably three times. It also
takes a lot of money for me to buy supplies.
How do you balance your studies and still have time for art?
I usually do work for my academic classes first, such as: reading etc. I save
art related work for last, because it relaxes me.
What does your schedule look like, classes related to art and not related to
art?
I take one academic class, which is "Interracial America" the rest are art
classes.
What are your favorite art classes, and why?
My favorite art class is Concept/Form/Context. It is when we use an idea and let
our creativity go crazy and make art forms to convey an idea.
How are you involved with art at the University?
Apart from class, I am an illustrator for a children's book, I draw for
publications, and do chalkings for dance marathon.
How can others get involved with your craft? Are there any classes or
"underground" activities that you would recommend?
There is a program called WeRead where students can write stories and other
students can illustrate them. Every Friday, there is an openÊmodeling studio
for all LSA students.
What do you get out of practicing your art form, a sense of accomplishment, an
escape etc?
I get a sense of accomplishment especially when I illustrate, because I get to
bring words to life.
How has art added value to your University of Michigan experience?
Right now, I am taking a course on hunger as apart of an art class. I have
grown a new perspective on the way I look at things. Taking in to mind
information about light, contrast, and colors.
Where do you want to go with this art form? Would you like to make a career
out of it and, if so what would you like to become?
Yes, I think I would like to be a children's book illustrator.
