Artists Among Us

Is there an artist that we should interview?

Medium: Computer Animation and Illustration
Year: Junior
Hometown: Bloomfield Hills, MI
Major: Art, Psychology
Favorite Quote: "I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are, because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might-have-been has never been, but a has-been was once an are."

How is your involvement with the arts valuable to your undergraduate experience?

It gives me an outlet for personal expression. It also gives me the ability to share my perspective with others and to gain a better understanding of the arts around me. Time spent as an undergrad is vital for understanding who you are and finding your place in society, so this outlet permits self exploration and discovery.

Why did you choose U-M over an art school?

Well, I went to a private high school so I wanted to get the full diverse experience of college. Attending an exclusively art focused educational environment would have been too centralized and could have stunted my cultural development. I wanted the experience of dorms, Greek life, and the communication with people from different majors. I feel as though attending the University of Michigan is going to give me a rounded education because of the variety of people's interests. Also, I'm really really interested in art, but I also wanted something else to fall back on.

What is one your favorite things to do with art? What do you find yourself focusing on?

What made me pick up a pencil and start to draw when I was younger was definitely comics. So, in general, telling a story or giving my opinion of society through sequential art is one of my favorite things to do. I know comics can seem juvenile on the surface, but I feel like it is truly a fine way to tell stories or give your opinion.

When and how did you know you were going to be majoring in art?

I've always thought about it, for as long as I can remember. Probably some time in high school though. I decided on art because I didn't want to be stuck doing something for a living that I didn't like. I wanted to be able to express and understand myself and then eventually get a job that I really enjoy.

What are some of your other hobbies (aside from art)?

Well whatever sounds good at the time. I really like to play it by ear. I'm in a fraternity. I love reading, watching movies, hanging out with friends, collecting quotes, and I read an insane amount of comics. I also spend a lot of time working out.

Have you ever won any awards/gained recognition for your artwork?

I've done some semi-commercial work... things like designing varsity jackets, emblems, additions to our house, and my mother's wedding ring; so I've gotten some recognition, but haven't won awards for these things. I guess I just haven't tried the whole gallery thing yet. Right now I'm developing my art skills and as I become more confident I will definitely give it a try. Just recently I was given the "MLK Leadership Award" after being nominated by the School of Art and Design.

Do you belong to any art clubs or organizations?

I was a founding member of SAS (Society for Art Students). This is an organization where us students work with the deans and faculty to coordinate decisions regarding issues within the art school, as well as branching out to the university community as a whole.

What would you say your ultimate long-term goal after graduation?

Ultimately I want to own myself. I eventually want my own publishing company where my comics will be created. Also, just recently I signed with a modeling agency so I'm going to stick with that as long as possible. To be honest, I really want to just get out of Michigan. I'd love to move to California or New York, but if I stay in the Midwest then maybe Chicago. In the end I want to be successful doing something that I truly enjoy.
