The Walking Project involves universities and community organizations that serve K-12 and college students, elders, people with disabilities, artists and general audiences in the United States and South Africa - literally and figuratively connecting people who live 8700 miles apart.

Some of the projects and events include:

gathering and telling walking stories with participants ranging from high school students through elders, from rural areas and urban neighborhoods in both countries.
    • jam sessions with local musicians, spoken word artists and Walking Project company members "riffing" on the idea of walking.
    • exchange opportunities for students interested in working with Walk & Squawk during residencies in South Africa and Detroit.
    • a workshop for Detroit artists interested in developing skills to create community-centered projects.
    • workshops at elementary, middle and high schools, art centers, galleries, universities and community centers as part of Walking Project residencies in conjunction with performances in Pietermaritzburg and Detroit.
