    four walks around the block: finding & mapping detroit desire lines

    A series of walks in the Woodbridge, RivertownCass Corridor and Heidelberg neighborhoods that ask participants to observe, photograph, draw, write, videotape, share stories and create personal maps of different neighborhoods.  Includes an introduction to Global Positioning Systems technology. In collaboration with the University of Michigan Map Library.

    all walks are on Saturdays, 1:30-4:30 pm - rain, snow or shine
    (dress for the weather!)

    (please let us know which date you'll be attending and leave your contact information)

    If you have a digital still or video camera or recording device, you're welcome to bring them along - but you can also just bring yourself. We'll be recording details from the walks to include in a new project that will allow people to access and remix the information we gather from these walks both on the web and through installations in public spaces.

    walking across continents: an exhibit

    A printmaking exchange among students & faculty from the Universities of Michigan and KwaZulu-Natal.

    paths we've walked: listening to our elders

    Since 2004, elder artists and writers from Hannan House have written poems, gathered stories, learned songs and made an installation - all about walking. This particular path concludes with a celebration featuring readings, music and an exhibit by artists from Hannan and the Walking Project.

    culture share workshop: Detroit & KwaZulu-Natal

    Visiting artists share Zulu music, dance and stories and ask workshop participants to share their own traditions and stories (for all ages).

    kicking up dust: a walking jam session

    A genre-busting gathering of Detroit musicians and poets riffing on walking and desire lines.  Curated by Blair and featuring:

    footprints: walking through time

    A cross-disciplinary panel facilitated by Walking Project artists.

  • Anthropologist Laura MacLatchy looks at evolution, bipedalism and walking
  • Historian Joseph Amato, author of On Foot: A History of Walking, looks at walking as a way to understand power and human relationships, past and present.
  • In collaboration with Arts at Michigan, as part of the Evolution Theme Semester.

    talking & walking: a public conversation

    Through research and discussions with artists, community partners and students, the walking project has explored biology, urban planning, politics, class, race and religion. The conversation becomes public for an afternoon, co-led by students, scholars and artists working on the project. As part of this convening, we'll take a walk with Joseph Amato, author of On Foot: A History of Walking, exploring the place of walking in his Detroit childhood.

    There will be a 5pm performance after talking & walking, followed by a special post-show discussion and reception for UofM students, in collaboration with Arts at Michigan.

    artists exchange & roundtable

    A cross-disciplinary workshop for artists interested in developing community-centered practice, including walking and mapping exercises and sharing best practices. Sunday afternoon includes a discussion about how to make a career doing this work.
