About The Jazz Foundation of America
The Jazz Foundation of America (JFA) was established in 1990 by a group of caring jazz enthusiasts to preserve the interests of an art Congress recently designated "a rare and valuable national treasure" - jazz. The JFA promotes cultural and educational activities that build awareness of the music and of the musicians that make it. The JFA operates the Jazz Musicians' Emergency Fund (JMEF). This fund assists struggling jazz artists with medical, financial, and career development needs. Since Katrina, the Jazz Foundation has been getting help to New Orleans musicians directly by paying a first month's rent for new homes, getting nearly $100,000 worth of donated instruments to musicians, providing counseling, advocacy, pro bono legal counseling, and creating a little employment by funding gigs in schools and shelters, as well as creating opportunities across America, connecting New Orleans musicians with those who want to employ them. The JFA is committed to doing all this in a personalized way - "one musician at a time."
