Motown Historical Museum
The museum exhibits trace the roots of Motown's remarkable story and chronicle its impact on 20th century popular culture and musical styles. The story begins with Berry Gordy, Jr. and a small house in Detroit that he christened Hitsville USA (now home to Motown Historical Museum). The story continues as Motown evolves into a major entertainment enterprise that was among the most diverse and influential in the world. The exhibitions include a fascinating collection of historical photographs, artwork, music, costumes and other memorabilia from this booming musical era.

Harmonie Park Studio (recording studio)
The history of Harmonie Park begins with the dreams of six young men, all friends from elementary school to high school. Brian and Mark Pastoria, Jimmy and Mike Romeo, Bruce Schafer and a guy named Flash (now known as Mike Haggerty) began their rock and roll dreams in the mid-seventies with the help of lead singer David Larson in their first band, Adrenalin. Harmonie Park has quickly progressed from an abandoned building that no one wanted to the gem of the downtown area. HPCG's talent as musicians and community advocates is an achievement in itself. Harmonie Park Recording Studio has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as, Aretha Franklin, Eminem, P-Diddy, Ralphe Armstrong, Anita Baker, LL Cool J, and George Clinton, among many others. Also presented will be Harmonie Network, which is the premier entertainment company providing world-class marketing, promotion and music distribution services. Harmonie is unique because it provides opportunities for anyone interested in the music industry!

Bert's Marketplace (Includes dinner and live entertainment by Urban Transport)
Looking for real-deal jazz in Metro Detroit? Head to Bert's Marketplace. Located in the heart of the city's famous Eastern Market, the humble Bert's has been serving up righteous beats and killer barbecue since 1987. With well-worn parquet floors, warm red walls, intimate lighting and a small stage, Bert's is the picture-perfect atmosphere for jazz fans and musicians alike. Unpretentious and inviting, photographs and posters that line the wall (Count Basie and Louis Armstrong among them) tell the story: This place is all about the music. Wednesday through Saturday, the finest players in the area gather to show off their chops. While the legendary Baker's Keyboard Lounge may get the lion's share of the attention around here, young players come to Bert's to learn, old players come to conquer - and the audience is always the winner. The vibe is competitive, respectful and intense - with particularly passionate performances often inspiring outbursts of praise from the audience and other musicians. Along with the club's modestly-priced barbecue, he also features a self-styled "food court" next door and Bert's Motown Room - a Motown-themed bar - in the adjoining building.

Buffet dinner includes:
Choice of one:
Jamaican jerk chicken
West Indian curry chicken
Herb baked chicken
AND
bar-b-que rib tips
+ green bean almondine, augratin potato, seasoned salad, dinner rolls and peach or apple cobbler for dessert. (included in the price of the trip)

If you are interested in this trip and are vegetarian or have special dietary needs, please email nancyll@umich.edu and we will see what can be arranged for you.

Featuring the music of Urban Transport:
The unusual pairing of trombone with alto sax along with exceptional playing and songwriting make Urban Transport one of the most exciting groups in Detroit. Individually, the members have performed with Joe Henderson, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Dave Liebman, The Mingus Big Band, Benny Golson, and Frank Morgan. Since forming 4 years ago, they have built a reputation, receiving accolades in local magazines, newspapers and radio for their music.
