Student Mini-Grants

Arts at Michigan is pleased to provide the first funding program at U-M dedicated to supporting undergraduate student initiatives in the arts. Student Mini-Grants funding is used to support arts and cultural projects which have a significant impact on campus life. Such projects include, but are not limited to contests, exhibitions, performances, concerts, guest-artist visits, site-specific art, workshops, festivals and publications. To find out what kinds of projects have received Student Mini-Grants check out Previously Funded Activities.

What is a Student Mini-Grant?

A Student Mini-Grant (SMG) is a monetary grant of up to $1000 to support student-led arts initiatives. Those who can apply include any undergraduate U-M student, staff or faculty member on behalf of an undergraduate student organization. For groups that are not formally registered MSA organizations, a sponsoring U-M department is required. Check out the FAQs and SMG Guidelines for more detail about the program.

How can my group get a Student Mini-Grant?

To qualify for a SMG someone from your student group must complete a formal application in which they describe how the groups proposed project fulfills the SMG Criteria. Applicants must also provide a detailed budget for the project. To see what an excellent application looks like check out the Sample Application.

Please note that Student Mini-Grants are limited to undergraduate student groups, check out Other Funding Sources for organizations that provide funds to graduate students, staff and faculty.

Funding Process

You must have an SOAS account to be awarded funding, as funds are transferred directly from Arts at Michigan to your SOAS account. You may also use departmental chartfields to have funds transferred directly to a sponsoring department. If you are awarded funding, we will send a record of the transfer to SOAS or your departmental administrator, through whom you will be able to access your funds. If your event involves a donation to charity you must have a Designated Fund (DF) account, in addition to your regular SOAS account, set up for your specific charitable cause.
