Overview

Promoting Collaboration
The Public Goods Council (PGC) of the University of Michigan was created in the fall of 1998. Its organizational membership includes a number of academic and non-academic units dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and culture. The purpose of this initiative is twofold: To utilize more effectively the extensive resources, programs and leadership qualities of the Public Goods Council members; and to promote collaboration among PGC members and other University entities in ways that enrich the academic and cultural experience on campus and in the community.

In addition, the Public Goods Council serves as a national model for other colleges and universities seeking to broaden the reach of thought, expression, ideas, and the arts. By maximizing and combining existing resources, the PGC has become a dynamic force in higher education. Collectively, the members of the Public Goods Council encompass a rich body of public cultural resources, or “Goods,” including art, music, book and plant collections, historical archives, scholarly resources, performance programs, coursework, and experiential learning.

Enriching Student Life and Learning
The Public Goods Council offers University of Michigan students access to extraordinary collections of written, visual, performance, and ecological resources. More importantly, the PGC seeks to engage students with these resources in creative, stimulating ways, thereby deepening their learning experiences at the University, engendering a lifelong appreciation for the arts and humanities, and contributing to their personal and professional development.

Enhancing Scholarship
The Public Goods Council enhances faculty teaching at the University of Michigan by expanding the scope of educational offerings, making available extensive research resources, and providing instructional settings far removed from the conventional classroom. By promoting partnerships with community residents and groups, the PGC enables faculty members to share their knowledge and resources with a broader spectrum of learners.

In addition, the Public Goods Council provides opportunities for individual faculty members to deepen their own knowledge, further their professional development, and refine their teaching skills through collaborative programs with well-known speakers, accomplished performers, and world-famous artists.

Building Bridges To The Community
One of the Public Goods Council’s most vital roles is to assist the University of Michigan in fulfilling its mission of service to the community. Public Goods Council members continually collaborate on ways to extend the University’s reach into the community through teaching, partnering, and resource sharing. At the same time, the PGC strives to engage members of the community through innovative programs that encourage public participation.
