LSA First-Year Seminar Arts Funding
Funding for Arts and Cultural Activities Fostering First-Year Seminar
Faculty-Student Interaction
GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING
Funding is available for activities involving LSA first-year seminar faculty
and their students together, e.g. attendance at arts and cultural events,
trips to museums and exhibits, art and cultural tours of cities or other
sites, or participation in community events.
Priority will be given to arts and cultural activities that:
- Take place outside the classroom.
- Stimulate faculty-student exchanges about intellectual topics.
- Complement course content and are integrated into class discussions.
How to Apply
Briefly address the following questions and send to
Pam Rinker via either email pjmoran@umich.edu
or campus mail at 6525 Haven Hall 1045. (Deadlines for applying are specified
below.)
- What is the activity being proposed?
- How will you integrate this activity into the course content?
- In what ways would you and your students be able to interact through
this activity?
- What is the total amount of funding being requested?
Guidelines for Funding
As is consistent with the purpose of first-year seminars, this grant will
fund arts/cultural activities that provide opportunities for strengthening
faculty-student relations. Proposed activities should be of interest to
all students and ones that will help build a comfortable environment for
students from all backgrounds.
We are open to proposals that assume a broad definition of "arts and
culture." However, the proposed activities should be linked with course content, with the expectation that some class time be spent in preparation before and in discussion after the event.
Art activities typically cost between $100-$250, with an average of $12 per student. Each seminar may receive only one grant per term.
If possible, each student is expected to contribute something toward the cost of the activity, with the grant funding around 75% of a given ticket price. For example, students might contribute $5 towards a $20 concert ticket; or the grant might fund a UM bus charter to a Detroit museum, while students would pay the $3 admission fee. In some cases, the grant might pay for the tickets, while students pay for pizza and pop after the event.
Funding is included for a faculty's significant other.
Grant funds cannot be used to pay for food.
Due Dates for Proposals
Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the term. We encourage you to submit your proposal as early as possible in order to incorporate the activity into your course syllabus and help form students expectations for your course. Our experience is that activities planned early in the term tend to increase the degree of cohesiveness among your students as well as maximize participation. We also recommend reserving transportation and performance tickets early to ensure availability and good seats.
Funding Sponsors
Funding is provided jointly by the LSA Dean's Office, the FYS Program, and Arts at Michigan.
